The Ancient Master Forgers
The Ancient Master Forgers were an order capable of sensing, studying, and shaping living Forge power.
Their exact number remains unknown. They were defined by their responsibilities and mastery rather than by a fixed association of one Forger with each Affinity Flame.
Forgemaster Prime is the last remaining member of the order.
The Golden Age of Forgers
During the period remembered as the Golden Age of Forgers, the Ancient Master Forgers discovered the eleven Affinity Flames already existing separately throughout the world.
The Master Forgers did not create the Flames. Their origin predates the order and remains unknown.
By studying ancient resonance and following Affinity Wakes, the order gradually located all eleven:
- Arcane-Psychic
- Electric
- Fire
- Ice
- Love
- Normal
- Rock-Earth
- Shadow
- Toxic
- Water
- Wind
The Golden Age marked the height of the order's knowledge. Living Forge power could be studied and shaped in balance, Forge Embers could be kindled, and the disciplines of the Master Forgers flourished.
The Golden Age was part of the larger Age of the First Forge. It is not a separately numbered timeline era.
Creation of the First Forge
After studying the eleven Flames, the Master Forgers recognized that each embodied a foundational force.
Left unguarded, the Flames could be exploited, destabilize their surroundings, or come into conflict with one another.
The order created the living First Forge as:
- A sanctuary for all eleven Affinity Flames
- A place where their power could be balanced
- A protected center for studying forgeprints
- A source of controlled creative energy
- A place where Forge Embers could be kindled safely
The First Forge did not erase the identity of any Flame. It held all eleven in a living balance.
The Disciplines
The Master Forgers practiced several disciplines rather than claiming ownership of individual affinities.
Known disciplines included:
- Flamekeepers, who maintained balance among the eleven Affinity Flames
- Emberwrights, who studied and shaped Forge Embers
- Patternsmiths, who studied and stabilized living forgeprints
- Forgewardens, who protected the First Forge and controlled access to its heart
- Chroniclers, who preserved the order's discoveries, experiments, and failures
A Master Forger could practice more than one discipline.
The Flamekeepers
Flamekeepers did not own individual Flames. They were expected to understand and respect all eleven, even when they possessed a natural affinity preference.
Their responsibilities included:
- Monitoring changes in affinity intensity
- Preventing one Flame from overwhelming another
- Studying interactions between opposing affinities
- Maintaining the chambers and channels connecting the Flames
- Recognizing instability before it threatened the Forge
- Protecting the Flames from misuse
Concordance
The Ancient Master Forgers created and kindled the living First Forge through Concordance.
Concordance is a state in which multiple Master Forgers align their intentions while balancing living Forge power. It is not domination, obedience, or the simple combination of strength.
A living Forge cannot be safely kindled through one will alone.
Concordance prevented the First Forge from becoming an extension of a single Forger's desires and allowed the eleven Flames to remain distinct while acting in balance.
Why Prime Cannot Restore the Forge Alone
Forgemaster Prime retains immense knowledge and power, but he cannot safely rekindle the First Forge alone.
Prime may possess enough power to force the process, but doing so could consume the remaining Forge Embers or cause another Shattering.
Prime refuses to risk destroying what remains.
He therefore awaits the arrival of a new Master Forger capable of entering Concordance with him.
Recognition of a Master Forger
Master Forger is not an ordinary rank that can be granted by an organization.
A potential Master Forger must demonstrate:
- A genuine bond with multiple Forgekin
- The ability to sense and shape living Forge power
- Resistance to domination by a single affinity
- The ability to enter Concordance with another Forger
- Recognition by the living First Forge, or what remains of it
Training may prepare someone, but neither Prime, the Emberbound, nor another authority can simply appoint a Master Forger.
The identity of Prime's awaited successor remains unknown.
The Central Teaching
The Ancient Master Forgers taught:
Creation without restraint becomes destruction.
Creation was understood as a responsibility rather than a right. Living forgeprints were not property, and the power to create did not grant authority over the life that emerged.
This principle explains Prime's refusal to force the restoration of the First Forge.
The Last of the Order
Prime is the last remaining Ancient Master Forger.
What became of the others has not been revealed. The public canon does not establish whether they died, disappeared, departed, became trapped elsewhere, or suffered another fate.
Their absence remains one of the Great Mysteries of the Age of Echoes.
