The Shattered Crown

2026-08-04 Updated 2026-08-04

The Shattered Crown is a decentralized alliance of Forgers, regional guardians, scholars, rulers, and independent seekers who believe the eleven Affinity Flames should remain separate.

Its members argue that gathering every Flame within the First Forge created a concentration of power great enough to attract the unseen attack and make the Shattering catastrophic. Returning the Flames to one location, they warn, could recreate the same vulnerability.

Their central doctrine is:

No single Forge should hold every Flame.

A second principle guides their organization:

Power scattered is power restrained.

Origin

The Shattered Crown formed during the early Age of Echoes as regional Forgers and leaders began recognizing how deeply affinity resonance had transformed their lands.

Some regions had survived because of changes created by a passing Affinity Flame. Others had developed environments and Forgekin populations that appeared inseparable from that influence. These communities questioned whether any restored First Forge had the right to reclaim power that had reshaped their homes.

The Shattered Crown was not created by the unseen attacker, does not know the attacker's identity, and did not cause the Shattering.

The alliance has no single founder. It emerged when several independent groups discovered that they shared the same belief: the Flames must be found and protected, but they must never again be controlled by one authority.

The Meaning of the Crown

The faction views the eleven Affinity Flames as eleven independent sources of authority.

Together, the Flames once formed a single crown of power within the First Forge. After the Shattering, each became a separate point capable of influencing a region, community, guardian, or lineage.

The Shattered Crown believes that separation is now part of the world's natural balance.

Bearers

Members of the Shattered Crown are formally called Bearers.

A Bearer accepts responsibility for finding, protecting, and determining the proper guardian of an Affinity Flame. The title represents a duty they hope to carry; it does not mean the member currently possesses a Flame.

A Bearer may argue that a recovered Flame belongs under the protection of:

  • A region shaped by its resonance
  • A community that has guarded its Affinity Wake
  • A capable regional guardian
  • Forgekin whose habitat depends upon its influence
  • An individual considered strong enough to defend it

No Shattered Crown member is currently confirmed to possess an Affinity Flame.

The Eleven Points

The Shattered Crown rejects centralized leadership. Its organization is divided into eleven Points, with each Point associated with one Affinity Flame.

A Point may include regional representatives, scholars, Bearers, hired trackers, Forgekin specialists, and guardians sympathetic to that affinity.

Because no Flame has been formally recovered, several Points remain incomplete, disputed, or represented only provisionally.

Representatives of the Points gather in the Crown Assembly to compare discoveries, recognize regional claims, settle disputes, and coordinate searches that cross territorial boundaries.

No single representative rules the entire Shattered Crown.

Bearer Disciplines

Bearers commonly serve in several practical roles:

  • Wakebearers track Affinity Wakes and investigate possible Flame activity.
  • Lorebearers preserve regional histories, claims, maps, and evidence.
  • Crownwardens protect important locations, artifacts, and recognized claims.
  • Pointbearers represent one of the eleven Points within the Crown Assembly.

These are responsibilities rather than fixed ranks, and one Bearer may fulfill more than one role.

Recruitment

The Shattered Crown recruits more openly than the Emberbound.

A potential Bearer may gain recognition by:

  • Discovering credible evidence of an Affinity Wake
  • Protecting a resonance-affected location
  • Sponsoring or leading an expedition
  • Preserving rare knowledge or artifacts
  • Demonstrating influence within an affinity region
  • Receiving the support of an existing Point

This openness allows the Shattered Crown to draw upon extensive regional knowledge and resources. It also makes the faction less unified and more vulnerable to personal ambition.

Stewards, Sovereigns, and Brokers

The Shattered Crown contains three broad philosophies.

Stewards believe the Flames should be protected for the benefit of regions, communities, and Forgekin affected by their resonance.

Sovereigns believe exceptional individuals may earn the right to control and wield a Flame.

Brokers treat Flame discoveries, artifacts, and Affinity Wake information as sources of wealth, leverage, or political influence.

These groups remain part of the same alliance, but their motives frequently conflict.

Many Stewards are honorable protectors. Sovereigns and Brokers are responsible for much of the faction's more aggressive reputation.

Methods

The Shattered Crown searches for the Flames through:

  • Affinity Wakes
  • Forgekin migrations
  • New forgeprint awakenings
  • Environmental changes
  • Ancient artifacts
  • Regional testimony
  • Purchased or exchanged information

Bearers may use negotiation, political pressure, hired treasure hunters, competing expeditions, misinformation, stolen research, or direct confrontation.

The Crown Assembly officially discourages unnecessary harm, but the alliance's decentralized structure makes that principle difficult to enforce.

Relationship with the Emberbound

The Shattered Crown and the Emberbound agree that the Affinity Flames survived and must not fall into reckless hands.

They disagree over what should happen after a Flame is recovered.

The Emberbound believe the Flames should eventually return to the First Forge when safe restoration becomes possible. The Shattered Crown believes that doing so would recreate the same concentration of power that made the original attack so devastating.

Members of the two factions may cooperate to protect a dangerous site, rescue Forgekin, or stop an irresponsible seeker. That cooperation often ends when control of a Flame clue, artifact, or Affinity Wake must be decided.

Emberbound members sometimes call particularly possessive Bearers Claimants. The Shattered Crown considers the term dismissive because most Bearers believe they are accepting responsibility rather than claiming ownership.

Symbol

The Shattered Crown's symbol is an eleven-pointed crown split into separate pieces, with no central jewel.

  • The eleven points represent the Affinity Flames.
  • The separations represent the protection created by keeping their power divided.
  • The missing center represents the faction's rejection of one authority controlling the whole Crown.

The Bearer Oath

Bearers swear:

What was scattered shall not be chained. What was found shall be defended. We bear the pieces, but no hand shall hold the whole Crown.
