LORE

An orchard keeper’s harvest journal, Rootrest Orchard We left the smallest pumpkins in the field this year. By the first frost, one had begun moving between the rows. Hollowick spends daylight beneath a tangle of dry vines, looking sufficiently ordinary that my youngest nearly put it in the harvest cart. It climbed out, bit through the carrying strap, and returned to its patch. We have since agreed to leave that corner alone. At night, a low glow shows through its crooked grin. It walks the boundary on rootlike feet, turning whenever something rustles near the stored harvest. Fallen leaves sometimes catch against its warm shell, and it takes considerable offense when we brush them away. Last evening, thieves entered through the western hedge. Hollowick waited until they lifted the first sack before stepping into the path. Its grin brightened. One man stumbled over his own feet; another dropped the sack and struggled with a gate latch he had opened moments before. They left without their cart. This morning, Hollowick was sitting on it. We moved the cart beside the smallest pumpkins. It seems pleased with the arrangement, though it still patrols after sunset. I have begun leaving a clear lane between the rows.
