Forger & Forgekin
The Bonding System
The sacred partnership between a Forger, a Forgekin, and the metal card that carries their bond.
A Forgekin is never owned. The Accord is a partnership freely entered and sustained through trust.
The relationship between a Forger, a Forgekin, and the metal card that carries it is governed by a connected system of terms. Each depends on the others, and together they define the sacred bond at the heart of Forged in Fire.
The Bonding Journey
The path from first meeting to lasting partnership follows a natural sequence.
Establishing the Bond
- The Accord
- Kinprint
EmberlinkThe device that enables the transition between Emberstasis and physical form.
The Ongoing Process
- Emberstasis
- Kindling
- Physical Presence
A Forgekin may voluntarily return to Emberstasis at any time.
Staying KindledAn optional choice to remain physically present rather than regularly returning to Emberstasis.
Understanding the Bond
During the Accord, the Forgekin offers a small portion of its essence to a prepared metal card. This essence establishes a unique resonance between the Forgekin, the Kinprint, and the Forger it has chosen.
The Accord is founded upon mutual trust. It cannot be successfully created through coercion, and it does not grant a Forger ownership or absolute control over their Forgekin.
Either partner may peacefully end the Accord; remaining together is a continuing choice, never an obligation.
The Kinprint does not contain a copy. It serves as an anchor capable of carrying the actual Forgekin between its physical form and Emberstasis. The Forgekin retains its memories, identity, personality, and free will throughout the process.
A Forgekin can maintain only one active Kinprint at a time. Copies of its engraving remain inert because they do not contain the living essence willingly offered during the Accord.
A Kinprint does not contain a copy. It carries the Forgekin that entrusted itself to the Accord.
An Emberlink reads the living resonance engraved within a Kinprint and opens the path between the Forgekin’s physical body and its Ember state.
An Emberlink does not create, duplicate, command, or imprison a Forgekin. It functions only through an active Accord, and the bonded Forgekin retains the ability to answer or refuse its Forger’s call.
Forgekin may enter Emberstasis to rest, recover, travel safely, or endure environments hostile to their Affinity. Some sleep deeply while within the card, while others remain aware of their Forger and nearby events.
A Forger may invite their partner to enter Emberstasis but cannot force it to do so against its will.
The Forgekin that emerges is the same individual that entered the Kinprint, retaining every memory and experience. Kindling is an invitation carried through the Accord, not a command. A Forgekin may refuse to emerge if it senses danger, distrust, or a request that violates its nature.
Powerful Forgekin, deeply bonded companions, and those capable of drawing sufficient Ember energy from their surroundings may Stay Kindled for extended periods. They travel openly beside their Forgers and return to their Kinprints only when injured, exhausted, or endangered by hostile conditions.
A Forgekin choosing to Stay Kindled is considered a profound sign of trust. Some legendary Forgekin remain Kindled for years.
Either a Forger or a Forgekin may choose to end an Accord peacefully. A shared journey may reach its conclusion, or companions may find that their paths now lead in different directions. Such a parting does not erase the trust, experiences, or affection they have shared.
If the Forgekin is in Emberstasis, it returns safely to physical form as the bond is released. The Kinprint’s living resonance fades, leaving an inert metal keepsake. It can no longer carry or call forth the Forgekin.
This is not an Extinguished Kinprint. Peaceful release marks a partnership brought to a close, not a bond broken through mistreatment. Any future Accord requires fresh, freely given consent; possession of the old Kinprint grants no claim over the Forgekin.
This occurs only when a Forger deliberately abuses, exploits, abandons, or repeatedly betrays their partnered Forgekin. Ordinary disagreements, failed battles, and honest mistakes do not extinguish a Kinprint.
When the Accord breaks, the Kinprint releases the Forgekin and its engraved channels lose their resonance. An Extinguished Kinprint cannot be repaired, copied, reactivated, or used to call that Forgekin again.
The Kinprint holds the bond. The Emberlink opens the way. The Forgekin chooses whether to answer.
