The Emberbound
The Emberbound are an independent order of developing Forgers committed to finding, protecting, and eventually returning the eleven Affinity Flames to the First Forge.
Forgemaster Prime did not establish or command the Emberbound. The order formed independently during the early Age of Echoes, and Prime recognized their purpose only after their search had already begun.
The First Circle
The Emberbound began with a group remembered as the First Circle. Its members were independent Forgers from different regions who had each begun investigating strange affinity disturbances left behind by the Shattering.
When these Forgers compared their discoveries, they realized they had been following separate trails created by the scattered Affinity Flames. Their combined findings provided the first credible evidence that all eleven Flames had survived.
The identities and number of the First Circle's members have not yet been recorded publicly.
Affinity Wakes
An Affinity Wake is a lingering trail of resonance left when an Affinity Flame passes through or profoundly affects a location.
A wake is not a physical trail of Forge Embers. It may instead appear through connected phenomena:
- Sudden changes in terrain or weather
- Unusual Forgekin migrations
- Multiple forgeprints awakening within a short period
- Forgekin displaying heightened affinity behavior
- Persistent resonance detectable by trained Forgers
- Ancient materials reacting as though the First Forge were nearby
Affinity Wakes fade, divide, and become distorted by other sources of affinity energy. They prove that a Flame influenced an area, but they do not reveal where that Flame is now.
Invitation and the Resonance Mark
Membership in the Emberbound is invitation-only. Potential candidates cannot formally apply and may not know they are being considered.
Existing members quietly observe candidates for qualities including:
- A genuine bond with their Forgekin
- Restraint when presented with power
- A willingness to protect Forgekin rather than treat them as tools
- Sensitivity to affinity resonance
- Courage without recklessness
- Commitment to restoration above personal recognition
Some potential candidates are first identified through a Resonance Mark. A temporary pattern revealed within a bonded Forgekin's forgeprint when it responds to an Affinity Wake beside a compatible Forger.
The mark indicates potential but does not guarantee membership. Its appearance may be brief and is recognizable only to those trained to detect it.
The Trials of Temper
An invited initiate must complete the Trials of Temper. These trials measure judgment, restraint, loyalty, and the strength of the candidate's bond with their Forgekin rather than raw combat power.
The trials may require a candidate to:
- Protect their Forgekin while under pressure
- Refuse power when using it would cause unnecessary harm
- Recognize when retreat is wiser than victory
- Distinguish an authentic Affinity Wake from a false trail
- Place the Emberbound's mission ahead of personal recognition
The complete standards used to judge candidates remain known only to the order's senior members.
Membership
Emberbound membership represents a path of Forger training. Every member develops the skills needed to understand Forgekin, investigate affinity phenomena, and safely handle discoveries connected to the First Forge.
Membership does not make someone a Master Forger. Most Emberbound may never attain that title, and Forgemaster Prime has not identified his awaited successor.
The stages of membership are:
- Unkindled. A potential candidate being observed without their knowledge.
- Spark. An invited initiate undergoing training and evaluation.
- Emberbound. A full member who has completed the Trials of Temper and sworn the Emberbound vow.
- Hearthkeeper. A senior member responsible for mentoring others and protecting a regional Hearth.
- Circlekeeper. A trusted leader responsible for comparing discoveries, authorizing major expeditions, and safeguarding restricted knowledge.
No Emberbound leader uses the title Master Forger.
Seekers, Chroniclers, and Wardens
Emberbound members train in three connected disciplines:
- Seekers track Affinity Wakes, investigate possible Flame sightings, and lead expeditions.
- Chroniclers preserve testimony, maps, Forgekin records, and discoveries concerning the Shattering.
- Wardens protect Forgekin, artifacts, dangerous locations, and recovered objects from exploitation.
Members may train in more than one discipline.
Hearths and the Circle
The Emberbound are deliberately decentralized. Small regional groups called Hearths track local resonance, protect important locations, and record unusual Forgekin activity.
Members may travel between Hearths when an Affinity Wake crosses regional boundaries or an investigation requires several disciplines.
The order's collective leadership is known as the Circle, named in remembrance of the First Circle. Circlekeepers compare discoveries from different Hearths, authorize dangerous expeditions, and determine what knowledge can be safely shared.
This decentralized structure prevents the loss or capture of one Hearth from destroying the entire order.
The Emberbound Symbol
The order's symbol is a broken ring surrounding eleven small sparks, with an empty space at its center.
- The broken ring represents the shattered First Forge.
- The eleven sparks represent the scattered Affinity Flames.
- The empty center represents what was lost and the place to which the Flames may eventually return.
The Emberbound Vow
Every full member swears:
We follow the wake. We guard the Echo. We return what was scattered. We kindle only when the Forge is ready.
The Forgeplates
Each Hearth maintains a prepared metal tablet called a Forgeplate.
On rare occasions, heat-written symbols appear across its surface. These markings carry warnings, confirmations, or limited instructions bearing a resonance the Emberbound recognize as Forgemaster Prime's.
No messenger delivers the markings, and Prime does not leave the First Forge. The Emberbound know the messages originate with him, but the method by which he reaches distant Forgeplates remains unknown.
Rekindlers and Keepers
Every Emberbound agrees that the eleven Affinity Flames must be found and protected. They do not all agree that the Flames should be immediately reunited.
Rekindlers believe restoring the First Forge is the order's ultimate purpose. They fear that delaying reunification increases the chance that the Flames will be lost, captured, or misused.
Keepers believe the Flames should remain separated and guarded until a new Master Forger is identified and the method of safe reunification is understood.
These schools of thought are not hostile factions. Their disagreement creates an ongoing debate within the Hearths and Circle.
Official Emberbound doctrine is:
Recover first. Protect always. Reunite only when the Forge is ready.
Whether the Affinity Flames can actually be reunited safely remains unknown.
