Fragment from an Unfinished Study Thoughtlings have only been observed within the deepest reaches of the Whispering Expanse. They sit motionless among its shifting stones, apparently meditating, yet instruments record intense psychic activity surrounding them. They do not speak. Instead, nearby observers begin hearing their own thoughts repeated in unfamiliar voices. During prolonged contact, Thoughtlings have demonstrated knowledge of memories, names, and fears that were never spoken aloud. Researchers initially believed their exposed, brainlike crowns allowed them to read thoughts. Later findings suggest something more troubling: the thoughts may not be entering the Thoughtling at all. They may be originating there and entering everyone else. No one has determined why every known Thoughtling eventually disappears. Shortly afterward, sightings of Mindveil often begin in the same region.
