Acornix hatch wherever healthy acorns are planted in well-tended soil, though “hatch” is the only word that feels right. One morning there is a seed beneath the earth; the next, a pair of rootlike legs is digging its way toward the sun. We raise them among the orchard rows, where they loosen packed soil, carry fallen seeds, and chase away pests with remarkably accurate Seed Shots. Once an Acornix chooses a patch of ground, moving it becomes nearly impossible. Its roots lock into the earth whenever it feels threatened, and no amount of pulling, bribing, or stern conversation will change its mind. They require sunlight, regular watering, and patience. Plenty of patience. Young Acornix are curious creatures and will bury tools, steal freshly planted seeds, and follow farmhands from one field to the next. Treat them kindly, however, and they will guard an orchard for generations. Several of our oldest oak trees began as Acornix raised on this very farm.
