LORE

We found the missing Acornix today. It had wandered beyond the eastern fence weeks ago, carrying one of the orchard’s fallen seeds. We followed the disturbed soil into a patch of woodland where something had poisoned the roots beneath the ground. It had grown, but not into the oak we expected. Its cap had split into a crown of dead branches. The little root-feet that once followed us between the orchard rows had burrowed deep into the blighted earth, drawing up something dark. Wherever it moved, nearby plants withered, and even standing close to it left us weak. I called its name. For a moment, one branch bent toward me as though it remembered. Then the ground began to move. We now know that an Acornix does not simply grow from the soil. It becomes a reflection of whatever the soil has endured. Guard where yours chooses to take root.
