LORE
Day six of our highland survey produced our first StoneHorn herd: seven adults and two calves grazing along a ridge that appeared far too narrow to support them. Their bodies resemble living formations of cracked granite, but they move with surprising care around their young. Adults use their horns to break exposed stone, uncovering the mineral deposits upon which the herd feeds. The calves then gather the smaller fragments left behind. Our guide warned us never to stand downhill from a startled StoneHorn. We learned why shortly afterward when a territorial adult lowered its Granite Horns and charged. Its footing became more certain with every step, carrying it across loose rock that sent the rest of us scrambling for cover. The impact split a boulder large enough to shelter our entire expedition. The StoneHorn was unharmed. My field equipment was not. They are not naturally aggressive, provided travelers keep their distance and avoid approaching the calves. Future expeditions should observe from an adjacent ridge, and bring fewer breakable instruments. Field notes of Taren Vale, Galecrest wildlife expedition
