LORE

Recollections of a storm-line repairer, Stormglass Steppe Voltsting used to follow the supply trolley along the lower line. We thought it liked the vibration of the wheels. It would scuttle beside us, dart beneath the trolley when thunder sounded, and reappear with its cable tail raised. Eventually, it began meeting us at the same bend each morning. It was waiting there when the damaged tower came down. I remember the first support breaking. My partner was still beneath the crossbeam, reaching for a dropped tool. Voltsting struck his boot with one pincer, hard enough to make him stumble backward, then planted itself between him and the falling cables. The discharge lit every metal edge on its body. When we could reach it, its legs were trembling and its tail dragged through the dust. Pluglet pressed close and shared a small charge while we cleared the wreckage. Voltsting remained facing the tower until the last worker was accounted for. We closed the line for repairs. It came to the bend anyway. These days, we stop there before beginning a shift. We check the trolley, count the crew, and wait for Voltsting to finish inspecting our boots. My partner still wears the dented one.
