“Plug it in, plug it in!”

LORE

A repair apprentice’s letter from Stormglass Steppe My first week at the relay shelter was mostly spent chasing Pluglet out of places where I thought it shouldn’t be. By the second week, I had started following it. It found a loose connection beneath the signal bench before I did. It also found my lunch, which was less helpful. Its cable tail can reach behind equipment without disturbing the whole assembly, although it insists on climbing onto the bench afterward to inspect my work. During yesterday’s storm, a discharge struck the outer line. Pluglet scrambled down from the window and sent a sharp spark into the damaged connection, breaking the current’s path before it reached us. Then it hurried to the small Forgekin sheltering beneath my chair. I watched it press its tail gently against an exhausted companion. The charge that followed was nothing like the first: a quiet pulse, barely enough to lift the hairs on my wrist. The other Forgekin stirred. Pluglet sat beside it until it could stand. I had thought it simply liked busy rooms and machinery. Now I suspect it keeps count of everyone in them. I have cleared a place beside the signal bench. It still prefers my lunch tin.
