LORE

*From a Glacial Tundra trail guide’s recollections* I recognized him by the notch in his left ear. As a Cubzero, he had followed our sled for nearly a mile with a stolen harness strap. Now he stood across the narrow pass, crystal-armored claws resting on the ice, and watched me approach. Male Cubzero mature into Rimeclaw. I knew that well enough. Seeing the little thief grown broad enough to block our route was another matter. He would not let us through. Each time I led the sled forward, he lowered his head. When I tried the slope beside him, he moved to meet me. The passengers grew restless. I was considering unloading the supplies when he turned and struck the crossing with one forepaw. The surface broke beneath his claws. A slab dropped into darkness, followed several moments later by the sound of water. We backed away. Rimeclaw picked his way uphill, stopping once to look behind him. I took a sounding pole and followed. His route brought us around the hollow ice and down onto a solid bank. Whether he meant to guide us or simply wanted us out of his way, I cannot say. While we secured the sled, he caught a loose harness strap beneath his paw. He held it until I came back for it.
