Along the festival paths of Rootrest Orchard, preparations always include a little space beside the musicians. No one knows whether Jolene will come, but no one wants her to arrive without somewhere to play. She rarely stays there long. With her guitar against her hip and her hat tipped toward the crowd, she wanders between tables, remembering familiar faces and noticing those trying not to be noticed. Children follow her through the lanternlight. Tired workers straighten when she approaches. Her charm can be unsettling. A swaggering challenger once marched toward her with a practiced speech and found himself unable to finish it. Jolene waited until his clenched hands relaxed, then offered him a seat. He spent the evening helping carry benches. Those expecting vanity usually find themselves put to work. Jolene has little patience for a full table beside an empty one, or a celebration whose cooks never get to dance. She pauses performances to make room, passes her hat for struggling families, and stays late when someone needs company. Orchard keepers remember one feast nearly abandoned after a hard season. Jolene played from the steps of the storehouse while people brought what little they could spare. By the final song, there was enough supper for everyone.
